The Bronx
The Bronx’s swaggering interpretation of hardcore punk found them a quick audience in Los Angeles, where guitarist Joby J. Ford, bassist James Tweedy, vocalist Matt Caughthran, and drummer Jorma Vik founded the band in 2002. Known for a blistering live show, the quintet attracted attention from major labels after only a handful of performances. An offer from Island/Def Jam materialized after the Bronx’s 12th gig, but the band decided to issue several recordings on its own label, White Drugs, before partnering with a major. Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke helped the Bronx compose an intense rock sound for their first demo, and the band’s debut, The Bronx, appeared in August 2003 via the Ferret Records label. Three years later, a second self-titled album marked the band’s first effort for Island Records, and the band supported its release by joining Priestess, the Riverboat Gamblers, and Wires on Fire on the WHODOYOUVOODOO Tour.
The quintet then parted ways with Island and issued a third eponymous release, unofficially known as The Bronx III, with help from Original Signal Recordings. Also in 2006, after being asked to play an acoustic set, the Bronx gave their sound a new spin, shifting from hardcore to Latin sounds. This led to the formation of alter ego band Mariachi el Bronx, who made their recorded debut in 2009. In 2013, a fourth volume of proper Bronx material arrived. IV leaned more toward a polished hard rock approach than the group’s earlier, punkier sound. ~ Andrew Leahey & MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi

Dave Hause
“The way we learned to live is fading fast/I guess we never bargained for a crash.”

For Dave Hause the American dream is a broken promise, a childhood ideal that has been shattered by the reality of the past two decades. On the musician’s second solo album, Devour, Hause scours the foundation of that crumbled dream in an attempt to discover how everything we believed growing up could have turned out so differently. The album, initially written to become the third record from Hause’s rock band The Loved Ones, follows his 2011 solo debut Resolutions, a disc that allowed the musician to understand his potential as his own artist.

As Hause, a Philadelphia native, began penning new music for a new album from The Loved Ones, it became clear that the group, who had taken a break after their second album, had stalled. These songs, however, which showcased a clear thematic journey, were meant to be vocalized by Hause and over the past few years he transformed them into Devour. Hause solidified the album’s sequence before even going into the studio, aiming to craft a narrative arc that drove the album from its dark, heavy first half into a lighter, more hopeful tone. A thematic line of melody runs through the songs, reflecting the overarching ideas in the music itself. The disc explores the heartbreak of shattered childhood promises of a better world and concludes with optimistic hope.

“Devour is about that inherent American appetite,” Hause says. “It’s in all the songs in some degree. There’s a reason why Tony Soprano became such a huge American icon – he’s this guy with this insane appetite for women and food and power. I think for the American public to latch onto a figure like that says something. Some of the positive things about America come from that as well, but there’s a real sense of reckoning that comes from devouring everything in front of you. Is it ever enough?”

Let us tame you, northern tribe, imbibe our sweet inscription, it’s the night and turning loves, we cheer your predilection, we embrace your every vice. Our vices tonight will include musical act Tarran the Tailor, burlesque beauty Ariel Helvetica, performance duo Johnny Nuriel & Isaiah Esquire, tarot, vaudeville, and of course, poetry. Vancouver, join us. We yearn for your affliction.

General Admission tickets are $20. A limitted number of $65 VIP tickets are also available, which include reserved priority seating, two private reading tokens included, and a VIP gift bag. Evening wear and themed costumes are encouraged but not required. This event is 21+.

The Poetry Brothel is a unique and immersive poetry event that takes poetry outside classrooms and lecture halls and places it in the lush interiors of a bordello. Based in concept on the fin-de-siecle bordellos in New Orleans and Paris, many of which functioned as safe havens for fledgling, avant-garde artists, The Poetry Brothel’s “Madame” presents a rotating cast of poets as “whores,” each operating within a carefully constructed character, who impart their work in public readings, spontaneous eruptions of poetry, and most distinctly, as purveyors of private, one-on-one poetry readings in back rooms. For a small fee, all of the “poetry whores” are available for these sequestered readings at any time during the event. Of course, any true brothel needs a good cover; The Poetry Brothel’s is an immersive cabaret, offering a full bar, live jazz, burlesque dancers, painters, and fortune-tellers, with newly integrated themes, performances and installations at each event. Lawrence

After years of consuming Stevie Wonder, Janis Joplin, and Eggo waffles, Lawrence delivers Breakfast, their twelve-song debut LP. Led by siblings Clyde Lawrence, 22, and Gracie Lawrence, 18, the New York-based soul-pop group blends old-school and new-school vibes to create a set of songs that sound as good on the record as they do at their high-energy live shows.

To create Breakfast, Lawrence teamed up with Grammy Award winning producer Eric Krasno (Lettuce/Soulive/Tedeschi Trucks Band), and brought in several NYC soul/funk mainstays including Adam Deitch (Lettuce), Cory Henry (Snarky Puppy), and Maurice “Mobetta” Brown (Tedeschi Trucks Band) for guest appearances. Following two short runs with Blues Traveler in the fall of 2015, Lawrence is currently promoting Breakfast with a national tour of headline dates, festival appearances, and as many pancakes and omeletes as possible.

Clyde and Gracie have been writing and playing music together since their early childhood, performing regularly at small cafés and clubs around lower Manhattan, and of course, in their living room at their grandparents’ request. During Clyde’s time at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, they met the crew of talented musicians that would ultimately form the full-time Lawrence lineup, an eight-piece keyboard-driven powerhouse with a dynamic horn section to support the siblings’ explosive vocal arrangements. It was with this group that they began to garner a passionate following at countless venues and colleges across the Northeast.

With Breakfast, Lawrence doesn’t shy away from the oft-maligned idea of “pop” music, but instead is on a mission to write the music they wish “pop” sounded like. They draw from the past and present, combining their love of The Beatles, Randy Newman, and Etta James with Beyonce, Ben Folds, and Amy Winehouse.

In addition to working with Lawrence, Clyde has composed songs and score for films such as Miss Congeniality (2000), Music and Lyrics (2007), The Rewrite (2015), and Hard Sell (2016). At age six, Clyde was admitted as the youngest member to the Songwriters Guild of America for his work on Miss Congeniality (2000). Gracie is also an accomplished actress who has performed on Broadway in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs, films such as Did You Hear About The Morgans (2009) and The Sitter (2011), and TV shows such as The Good Wife (2012) and The Americans (2014).
